I’ve always loved podcasting. I love the format, the medium … I love consuming podcasts. I love what podcasting can do for a business.
What I don’t like … is the huge time suck it brought to my business.
After years, I finally figured out a framework that takes what use to be 10-12 hours and reduced it to 1 hour.
Now podcasting is fun! I’m now operating within my Zone of Genius: interviewing, growing my network, and pursuing clients and partnerships.
I’m now on a mission to help other entrepreneurs unlock the potential of podcasting for their business while avoiding all the headaches that come with it.

[00:00:00] Cliff Duvernois: Hello everyone. And welcome to Entrepreneurs on Podcasting. The podcast thing for entrepreneurs who want to grow their business, make their mark on the world through podcasting, but are struggling to do that. Now I’m your host and your guide Cliff DuVernois. And with this being episode, number one, I want to map out to you who I am, why you should care about this podcast, and more importantly, what’s in it for you.
[00:00:25] Cliff Duvernois: So let’s go back in time. This is about seven or eight years ago. I belonged to this advanced marketing group. I was a solopreneur. I had a business and I’m working like crazy to get leads because I want my business not only to survive, but to thrive. And you know, my biggest challenge is how do I differentiate myself?
[00:00:45] Cliff Duvernois: What can I do? That’s different from all of my competitors. Now I asked this question to my business coach and his response start a podcast. And I said, great, but I don’t know how well, you know, I did what most people would do. And I climbed onto YouTube. I searched all over to find videos on how to start, create and launch a podcast.
[00:01:06] Cliff Duvernois: And I did find some videos that were full of really great advice, but they were five years old way out of. And these videos of course, were coming from people who had millions of listeners. And I thought, well, maybe I can learn something here. You know, maybe there’s something to be said for these people, you know, in their processes.
[00:01:23] Cliff Duvernois: And you know, they’re seeing some measure of success. So I did everything that they said. I bought the equipment, the podcast gurus told me, yo, you got to record and edit inside of garage band. You gotta use these filters. You gotta use this Q, but I’m not an audio engineer. I’m an entrepreneur. Right. I actually have a business to run, but you know what?
[00:01:47] Cliff Duvernois: I wanted to do the podcast. So I finally figured out all that stuff launched the podcast. I was starting to get interviews for the podcast. Things were moving, but there was a problem for me to produce one episode. One 30 minute episode was taking me a whole day. I mean, anywhere between 10 to 12 hours every single week.
[00:02:09] Cliff Duvernois: And I got to a point where probably about 15 episodes, 16 episodes in, I just got to a point where this just wasn’t sustainable. I really wasn’t getting anything from the podcast. Maybe 10 downloads an episode, one of them being my mom. And so I was like, you know what? I can’t do this anymore. I have to get leads.
[00:02:28] Cliff Duvernois: I got to talk to people. I got to get out there and start, you know, getting money through the door. You know, I only got so much. So along with 60 to 80% of people that were out there, my podcasts went into pod fade, but then something interesting happened one day after I made this decision to go into pod, fade my phone rang.
[00:02:49] Cliff Duvernois: Now I had met this gentleman a couple of weeks before, and I was telling him about my business. And I just happened to mention that I had a podcast and in the stack of papers, I gave him, I said, yeah, now my podcast is listed in there. And he was like, Well, he actually went and listened to my podcast. One episode convinced him that I was the guy that he wanted to work with.
[00:03:13] Cliff Duvernois: Now, of course I was grateful. I mean, this is a high ticket client that came literally out of nowhere and decided to work with me because of one podcast episode. Now I remember I was a static and I go back to my marketing group and a bunch of us in their head podcast. But no one had ever gotten a client from a podcast.
[00:03:31] Cliff Duvernois: So I go in there and I’m like, Hey, I got a podcast episode, put it out there. And I got a client and of course they’re all excited for me. Right. They’re like, Hey, where do you go, cliff? That’s really awesome. How did you do it? I didn’t know how, I don’t know what it is that I did in that episode to convince this gentleman that I was the guy to work.
[00:03:54] Cliff Duvernois: The only thing that I knew for sure was that podcasting works. That’s the only thing that I knew a hundred percent certain in my core. And from there it became this, like multi-year. Right. Cause I still am running a business. I’m still trying to get money through the door. I want my business to thrive and to grow.
[00:04:12] Cliff Duvernois: I just don’t have all this time for podcasting. And you know, what was more, more frustrating than anything was? I didn’t understand how podcasting fit into the overall marketing plan or sales plan for my business. To me, it was just something to create content well over the years, my businesses. And every time that it changes does a pivot.
[00:04:33] Cliff Duvernois: I always start a podcast because I’m hoping that maybe this time I found the magic formula, right. Maybe I put together the right things to do to make this podcast an effective marketing tool to help me to be able to grow my business in one podcast after another would go into pod fade, because I just simply didn’t have the.
[00:04:51] Cliff Duvernois: So one day as I was sitting there and I was thinking to myself about my marketing plan, I realized I came to one inescapable conclusion. I just had to simply abandon what all the podcasts gurus had taught me in all of those YouTube videos. I had to find my own path. You see, the thing is, I’m not a podcaster, I’m an entrepreneur with a podcast.
[00:05:12] Cliff Duvernois: There’s a huge difference. And these videos were to help people to start podcasting, right, to become a podcaster, to get new leads of. So I had to go on this path to figure this out on my own, but man alive, it would take years. But what I did is I spent time dealing with sales experts, marketing gurus, story, selling expert time management experts.
[00:05:36] Cliff Duvernois: Before I finally figured out that right combination of nuts and bolts that was required to make a podcast for a, to turn a podcast into a business growth machine. And you know what it works. It’s worked for me. It’s worked for my clients and they’re getting to see real results. But the thing is I want to go beyond my clients because so many podcasts out there go into pod fade.
[00:06:00] Cliff Duvernois: And my mission is to help those entrepreneurs with those podcasts. I want to bring that number down. So that’s why I started the entrepreneurs on podcasting show. This is where I interview entrepreneurs who are using podcasting to grow their business. So if you’re an entrepreneur, you have a podcast, but you’re hitting burnout because it takes way too much time.
[00:06:23] Cliff Duvernois: Then this podcast is for you. If you’re an entrepreneur and you want to grow your business, but you’re struggling with how podcasting fits into your overall marketing picture, then this is the podcast for you. And as I mentioned before, you’re going to hear from entrepreneurs, small business owners from all different verticals, we’re talking B2B as well as B2C who are using podcasting to grow their business.
[00:06:49] Cliff Duvernois: They’re going to share their strategies, their tactics. You’re going to hear their stories, what they struggled with, how they overcome those challenges. And with all this knowledge out there, there’s going to be a ton of great information for you to be able to apply to your podcast for your business.
